Baseball: Pompton Lakes beats Waldwick; plus, the updated schedule

WAYNE — The Pompton Lakes and Waldwick baseball teams were the only two in Bergen or Passaic counties to brave the elements today by playing a state tournament game.

Second-seeded Pompton Lakes beat seventh-seeded Waldwick, 11-1, in a game that ended after five innings due to the NJSIAA’s 10-run rule.

Senior right-hander Sean Lindberg threw a three-hitter and lifted a three-run homer over the right-field fence at Passaic Tech to lead the Cardinals. Senior shortstop Connor Lavin also hit a three-run homer for the Cardinals, who secured their second straight 20-win season.

Playing today helped Pompton Lakes avoid having to play its two most important games of the season in what would’ve been an extremely rare doubleheader Saturday.

That, unfortunately, is the unusual situation in which Wayne Valley finds itself.

The Indians’ North 1, Group 4 quarterfinal against Ridgewood was postponed from today until Saturday. That game will be played at 10 a.m. at DePaul.

Wayne Valley’s players and coaches will then make the short, four-mile trip from DePaul to Passaic Tech, where the second-seeded Indians will play third-seeded Pompton Lakes in a Passaic County semifinal set for 3:30 p.m. The first Passaic County semifinal, which will pit fifth-seeded Wayne Hills against top-seeded Lakeland, still will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Passaic Tech.

“That could very difficult, especially on a catcher, who’s got to squat for two games,” Pompton Lakes coach Paul Tanis said. “If it doesn’t go well for them in the first game, will they be able to re-focus? I think they will. They’re a good enough team to do that. But if they do real well [against Ridgewood], that could carry them into the next game. It’s a double-edged sword, I guess.”

Boys Volleyball: Sectional quarterfinal preview for 5/16

For this week’s look around the courts of the North Jersey boys volleyball scene, we’re previewing Thursday’s sectional quarterfinal matches that involve local teams:

NORTH 1
* No. 7 Bergen Catholic (19-8) at No. 2 Vernon (16-3): The Crusaders have advanced to the North 1 semifinals in each of the past two years but will have to get by the West Jersey Volleyball League champ to make it three straight. BC senior Kirk Nouhan is the latest member of the 2,000-assist club in New Jersey, and we are working to find out exactly where he ranks all-time (head coach Mike DeCastro placed his total at around 2,005 following Tuesday’s opening-round win). Vernon, which had a first-round bye, last reached the sectional semifinals in 2010 and will rely heavily on 6-foot-5 senior Erik Darker, who had 12 kills and three aces in a win over Wayne Hills last week.

* No. 6 Belleville (16-7) at No. 3 Wayne Valley (20-6): The Passaic County champs are trying to make it back to the North 1 final for the first time in three years and got their postseason push started with a sweep of No. 14 Hackensack in the opening round. Junior libero Ryan Brown has a North Jersey-leading 458 digs this season for Wayne Valley, which has won eight straight. Belleville swept No. 11 Pope John in the first round thanks in part to nine kills and eight blocks from junior Edward Peralta.

* No. 5 Don Bosco (18-8) at No. 4 Lakeland (21-6): The Record will be covering this battle of county runners-up hungry to take things a step further in the state tournament. Both teams swept their first-round matches on Monday, as the Ironmen bested No. 12 Teaneck for the third time this season, while Lakeland took care of No. 13 West Essex. Don Bosco, which fell to Fair Lawn in the 2012 North 1 final, has been getting solid play from senior Tom Whittam, who has led the team in digs each of the last three matches. Lancers senior Jared Holm had his fourth match of 20-plus digs this season against Teaneck. Lakeland, the 1988 and 1992 state champ, last reached the sectional semifinals in 2009.

* WEDNESDAY — No. 1 Fair Lawn def. No. 9 Montclair, 25-12, 25-12: The Cutters (32-6), who have won every North 1 championship since the NJSIAA realigned its boys volleyball sections in 2010, prevailed in a match-up that featured the two hitters ranked first and second in the state in kills this season: Fair Lawn senior Chris Nugent (471 kills going in) and Montclair senior Stephon Sanders (315). Nugent outdueled Sanders in that category, 7-1, to help his team top the Mounties (15-9).

NORTH 2
* No. 5 Harrison (16-7) at No. 4 Summit (13-4): Fresh off their first-ever Hudson County final appearance, the Blue Tide now takes aim at reaching the North 2 semifinals for the first time. The two WJVL rivals split their regular-season series with the home team winning each match, and this will be the playoff opener for both. Harrison middles Varinder Singh and Matt Oliveira played well in the Hudson tournament, combining for 25 kills and 18 blocks in three matches, and sophomore libero David Penaherrera has been consistent, averaging nine digs per match.

Finally, here is an updated North Jersey Top 5, including others knocking on the door (see above for win-loss records):
